Three men in the Maison’s bespoke morning suits, with burgundy ties

Maison Bourelly · Milan

Bespoke tailoring for men in Milan

Suits, jackets and overcoats born from a paper pattern drafted for one man alone, and shaped by hand, fitting after fitting. By appointment, at the atelier or at your residence.

Bespoke menswear

A garment that does not exist before you

In the bespoke tailoring of Maison Bourelly there are no sizes, no catalogues and no models to adapt. Every garment begins with a meeting and takes shape around a single person: his measurements, his posture, the way he moves, the life the garment will accompany.

This is Italian handcrafted tailoring in its most complete form: a paper pattern drafted from scratch, a cloth chosen together from the collections of the great mills, a jacket canvassed and built by hand, and the fittings that bring the garment, step by step, to its balance.

A garment does more than clothe a body. It receives its posture, its gestures, its way of being in the world.

A necessary distinction

Bespoke or made to measure: what is the difference

“Made to measure” has become an elastic phrase: it is used for a suit built from nothing and for a factory garment adjusted by a few centimetres. In truth, these are three very different ways of dressing a man.

Maison Bourelly makes bespoke garments exclusively. We do not offer made to measure.

Why it is called “bespoke”

The word comes from English tailoring: a length of cloth was “bespoken”, promised to a particular client. Ever since, it has described a garment that does not exist before meeting the man who will wear it.

The bespoke wardrobe

Bespoke suits, jackets and overcoats

From professional life to the most important occasions, the Maison makes the entire men’s wardrobe to measure.

  1. 01

    Two- and three-piece suits

Jacket and trousers in dialogue, for work and for formal occasions alike. The waistcoat of a three-piece adds rigour and character.

  2. 02

    Jackets

Shoulder, lapel, armhole and line conceived for the person and the use: from the city jacket to the one for leisure.

  3. 03

    Ceremony and wedding suits

Morning suits and suits for the groom and his best men: for a day that calls for a unique garment, built with the time it needs.

  4. 04

    Overcoats and trench coats

Volumes, weights and cloths chosen to last for years, constructed to move with the wearer.

  5. 05

    Shirts

Collar, cuffs and fit defined to measure, in the detail of every choice.

  6. 06

    Trousers

Waist, drape and length calibrated to the figure, paired with a jacket or worn on their own.

The method

How a bespoke suit is made

From the first meeting to the final stitch, six moments mark the making of every garment. None of them can be skipped.

  1. The salon of the Maison Bourelly atelier, where the first conversation takes place
    01

    The meeting

A private conversation, at the Milan atelier or at your residence. We speak of work, travel, occasions and habits: of what the garment must accompany, even before how it should look.

  2. 02

    The choice of cloth

From the collections of Dormeuil, Loro Piana, Zegna and Holland & Sherry the cloth is chosen: weight, hand, weave and colour, according to the season, the use and the person.

  3. Taking the waist measurement with a tailor’s tape
    03

    Measurements and pattern

Measurements are the starting point, not the result. Posture, proportion and bearing guide the drafting of the paper pattern, drawn from scratch and unique.

  4. The Maison’s tailor sewing by hand, bent over the cloth
    04

    Cutting and construction

The cloth is cut on the pattern and the garment is built by hand: the canvas shaped with stitches, the basting, the sleeves set by hand.

  5. 05

    The fittings

Usually three fittings. At each one the balance of the shoulders, the fall of the lines and the freedom of movement are checked on the body.

  6. The groom, in his bespoke Maison morning suit, embraces the bride on the wedding day
    06

    The delivery

The garment is complete and belongs to one man alone. The pattern is kept at the Maison, ready for every future commission.

The construction

What cannot be seen is felt when worn

Drafted for you and kept at the Maison: every new garment starts from a form already perfected, even years later.

Hand-canvassed, never fused

The canvas, the heart of the jacket, is shaped and sewn to the cloth by hand, with no fusing: the jacket stays soft, takes on the shape of its wearer and keeps it for years.

Three fittings

The garment comes closer to the person step by step, until it reaches its final balance: shoulders, lines, volumes, movement.

The cloth

Fabrics from the great mills

The first gesture of a garment is the choice of cloth. We work with the collections of some of the most distinguished international mills, chosen for quality, character and longevity, with fabrics for every season and every occasion.

  • Absolute Class. Savile Row Standards with a Milanese Heart. […] As a Londoner who grew up a stone’s throw from Savile Row, I’m admittedly a bit of a snob when it comes to a proper three-piece suit. But this place completely blew me away. The pattern-cutting is top-tier—sharp, immaculate drape, and feels like a second skin.

Frequently asked questions about bespoke suits

What is the difference between a bespoke suit and a made-to-measure suit?

For a bespoke suit the paper pattern is drafted from scratch for the client and the garment is built by hand, with fittings while it is being made. Made to measure starts instead from a base model, altered within preset parameters, and is largely industrial. Maison Bourelly makes bespoke garments exclusively.

What does a hand-canvassed jacket mean?

Between the outer cloth and the lining of a jacket lies an inner structure, the canvas. In traditional Italian tailoring it is sewn in by hand, stitch by stitch: the jacket stays soft, follows the body and over time takes on its shape. Many jackets on the market, even high-end ones, are instead fused, with an adhesive interlining bonded to the cloth, or half-canvassed. At Maison Bourelly every jacket is canvassed by hand.

How many fittings are there?

Usually three fittings, spread over the construction of the garment. Each one refines balance, fit and movement.

How long does a bespoke suit take?

Timing depends on the garment, the cloth and the fitting schedule, and is agreed at the first meeting. For a wedding or an occasion with a fixed date, it is advisable to contact the Maison well in advance.

Which cloths can I choose from?

The collections of Dormeuil, Loro Piana, Zegna and Holland & Sherry, with fabrics for every season and occasion. The choice is made together, according to the use of the garment and the client’s preferences.

Do you make wedding and ceremony suits?

Yes: morning suits and suits for the groom and his best men, built with the same bespoke method as every other garment, from the original pattern to the fittings.

Can fittings take place at my residence or abroad?

Yes. Appointments take place at the Milan atelier or, on request, at the client’s residence, in Italy and abroad.

How much does a bespoke suit cost?

Every garment is a unique project: its value depends on the cloth, the complexity of the construction and the number of pieces. The proposal is presented personally at the first meeting.

Is the paper pattern kept?

Yes. The pattern is kept at the Maison and becomes the starting point for every later commission, which can begin from a form already perfected.

How do I book a first appointment?

By filling in the form at the bottom of this page, or by writing on WhatsApp or by email. The Maison personally contacts every client to arrange the meeting.
